If the alarm bells started going off when you read that headline, I wouldn’t be surprised. That’s because one of the biggest scams that you’ll see advertised both online and off is to do with envelope stuffing. You’re normally asked to send a fee to get all the details and learn how to do it – and all you get in return is a small booklet or some sheets of paper asking you to offer the same scam to other people.

But this method doesn’t work like that. This method has to do with mail order, and while you will be involved in selling something it’s nothing like a scam at all.

While a lot of products are sold online nowadays, you can still bring in a good income by selling items via mail order. In fact it can also be combined with an online business, as you can stuff envelopes with discount vouchers and small brochures to send out to your regular customers, and get a good amount of orders in return.

But it’s also a great idea to use to find new customers – all you need is a product to promote and a mailing list of people to send the information to. The best things to sell by post are small and light, since they are easy to slip into a mailbox and don’t cost much to mail out either – giving you the option to offer zero mailing costs and build that into the price of the product itself.

Some people do well by creating their own information booklet on a specific subject. They can get them printed up in small amounts at the same time as getting promotional leaflets printed up to advertise them. If you know a lot about a specific topic you could make your own booklet and advertise it in a magazine dedicated to that topic.

Once you have decided what it is you want to sell you either need to go about creating it (as described above) or find a source to buy it at a low price and then mark it up before selling it on. This could be a wholesaler for example. The next step after that is to get hold of a mailing list of people to mail your promotional package to. Do a search online to find companies who sell mailing lists and see how much it would be to buy one that is comprised of people who are interested in what you have to sell.

There can be some costs involved with getting started in the mail order business, as you can see, but there are also incredible rewards if you happen to hit on an area which is popular and produces a lot of sales. CDs containing computer software and adult products in particular always do well!

There are plenty of ways to use mail order either as a business in itself or as a way to extend your current business to find more customers, or alternatively to communicate more readily with the ones you have. You’ll soon find that stuffing envelopes can indeed be a very profitable way to make money – so long as you don’t fall for the scam of doing it for anyone other than yourself.
